What/Why
The Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) is an agreement
currently being negotiated that would cut wages, undermine
democracy and workers' rights, enforce "intellectual
property rights," and promote lower environmental
standards, expanding trade and increasing profits at
great cost. An attempt to expand the North American
Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) , FTAA is currently being
negotiated in secret by 34 countries in the western
hemisphere, with very little information provided to
the public or the press. This April, the FTAA will be
discussed at the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City,
Canada, and people across the Americas are joining together
to voice their opposition.

Mohawk Meeting Update - 04.12.01
from: jncatr@mail.wm.edu
Hey everyone! Here is an update to what happened at
the meeting that we had at Akwesasne. It was a great
meeting and it cleared up a lot of confusion that i
had and i hope this e-mail will for you too. So whoever
is spreading rumors, STOP IT! Everything will be okay
and we will be able to smash the FTAA and stuff. All
right?
And if you are going to Akwesasne b/c you are so concerned
with your easy ride into Quebec, we don't want you to
come!!!!
The Mohawks want us to emphasize
a few things with the media:
That the bridge is a daily affront to their sovereignty.
(i.e one gent we met has to go through customs on his
own land each time he goes to see his father on the
Canadian side)
Expose conditions on the reserve.
Such things as environmental racism (the Canadian government
warns women on the reserve not to breast feed because
pollution in the river from Alcan)
These two points can be easily tied in also to why we
are protesting the FTAA.
Plan for the day:
Noon social on highway 37 near
border (it will be visible)
There will be a Fish fry (there will be vegan soup)
and talks.
They emphasized on us having fun! They want us to provide
a speaker to talk about issues on FTAA
suggestions
Nisha Anand (from the Call to Action tour and from the
War Resisters League and Jody Dodd (from Philadelphia
Direct Action Group)
People can join at Noon at Akwesasne, but we are still
strongly encouraging folks to join us at Burlington
(www.vermontactionnetwork.org) BY the 18th (legal training
11-3, Cultural Sensitivity training 5pm-7, SPOKECOUNCIL
8-11) so we can figure out some things for ourselves.
NO ALCOHOL OR DRUGS WILL BE TOLERATED (We need clear
heads)
We will follow the lead of the Mohawks in all things
once we enter the reserve. they will have organized
security (to protect folks) There will also be a mobile
medical clinic.
The whole event will be PEACEFUL AND ORGANIZED.
Especially with the procession through Customs It will
be "child friendly"- lots of people will be
bringing their kids. Also- if you want to bring a gift
to show our gratitude for the Mohawks' hospitality-
they suggested that we bring something for the kids.
Toys, clothes, and pokemon stuff maybe???
This is also not a risk-free event. Please think twice
about what you bring with you when we cross the border.
(what customs might perceive as a weapon, etc.)
We will not leave anyone behind at customs.
Our goal is to have everyone clear customs as guests
of the Mohawk Nation.
On the bridge we will allow ambulances and firetrucks
through, and try to move into the left lane to allow
local traffic to pass.
Exact details of the crossing are not yet figured out
as the situation is fluid, but will be organized by
our Mohawk hosts. So, DON'T WORRY. It will be well organized,
discplined and peaceful.
SEE you guys there! IT sounds like lots of fun and a
great event. I am very excited and can't wait. IT would
be great for coalition building, too and this will hopefully
not be the last time that we work with the Mohawks.

The People's March
of the Americas
As part of the People's Summit
of the Americas
and the Hemispheric Social Alliance
THE MARCH OF THE PEOPLES OF THE
AMERICAS
Saturday April 21st at Noon
Rally: Old Port of Quebec City
(Abraham-Martin Street)
The Réseau québécois sur líintégration
continentale (RQIC) and Common Frontiers, along with
other coalitions including the Convergence Table are
organizing the March of the Peoples of the Americas
under the theme: Resisting - Proposing - Together.
There are other ways to foster continental integration
than the strictly commercial approach of the FTAA.
This is why a great number of organizations that will
be in Quebec City during the Summit of the Americas
will participate in this demonstration. Thousands
of people from Canada, Quebec, the United States, and
members of the Hemispheric Social Alliance from Latin
America will unite their voices expressing their opposition
to the process of corporate-led globalization and the
commercial agreements that sustain it.
While the heads of states of the hemisphere meet behind
the barricades in order to shape the future of the Americas,
all sectors of civil society will be on the streets
voicing their concerns: unions, women organizations,
environmentalists, students, community organizations,
international solidarity organizations, human rights
advocates, groups opposed to corporate-led globalization,
ethno-cultural associations, regional coalitions, church
groups.
It will be a colorful, diverse and pacifist march.
The route has been designed in order to avoid provocation
and confrontation. All participants are asked
to respect the route in order to ensure the security
of those participating.
Schedule and organization:
* Arrival of people and busses at noon at the Old Port
of Quebec City. We recommend that all buses use
highway 40 on their way to Quebec, and meet us on Saint-Paul
Street. For those of you who are coming by foot,
or are planning to use another highway to enter the
city, a committee will meet you on Saint-André
Street..
* A group in charge of March security will be clearly
identified as from the Peopleís Summit and will
indicate to you how to get to the rally on Abraham-Martin
Street. There you will find directions to each
of the different sectors of the march.
* Empty busses will be asked to proceed to the parking
lot reserved for the event which is located near the
end of the march in the Victoria Park area. Each
bus will be given an identification number in order
to facilitate the return of demonstrators to their respective
bus. All groups coming by bus, should also ensure
they clearly identify their vehicles with signs on the
front and back windows.
* In order to limit traffic jams while demonstrators
are getting off the buses, we kindly ask everyone to
follow the instructions given by the security staff
of the Peopleís Summit, and be prepared to get
off your bus as quickly as possible after arriving.
* Only buses and people on foot will be allowed entry
to the rally area. Because of limited parking
space for cars and other vehicles, we recommend that
people park their vehicles far from the rallying and
starting points of the march.
* The march will start at 13:30, and will be opened
by international delegations, and the organizers of
the event.
* The route will start on Abraham-Martin Street, we
will take Saint-Paul Street - which changes its name
and becomes Charest - up to Rue de la Couronne, where
we will turn right to reach the parking lot of the Municipal
Stadium at Victoria Park. This is a 2.5 km route.
* There will be animation throughout the march..
We will use the full width of the streets. These
streets will be closed to traffic, and reserved for
participants of the march.
* The participants are expected to reach the end of
the march, the parking lot of the Municipal Stadium
at Victoria Park, at around 15:00. This area is
big enough to accommodate 20,000 people.
* There will be musical animation while people are arriving
at Victoria Park.
* There will be 1 hour of speeches following the March
where representatives of the Hemispheric Social Alliance,
as well as representatives from the Convergence Table
will address the public.
* The event is expected to end at 16:15.
* We are asking all organizations and participants to
take their placards, and all other materials away with
them.
* We will announce from the stage how to proceed to
the buses. Members of the security staff of the
Peopleís Summit will direct participants to the
location of the busesí parking site located near
Victoria Park.
* An information pamphlet with further information for
marshals and bus coordinators will be circulated shortly
to the members of the RQIC, Common Frontiers, and the
Convergence Table and posted on this website.
* A detailed map of the route of the March of the Peoples
of the Americas, as well as a map indicating the drop-off
locations, the starting and ending points of the march
and the busesí parking lot will be made available
shortly.
Other information:
* Each organization participating in the event is asked
to ensure marshaling. We suggest 4 people for
50 participants. We ask that these people be identified
with an armband of the colors of their organization.
The Peopleís Summit security staff will ensure
coordination with the marshals.
* For the participants coming from outside Quebec City,
and planning to drive into the city, whether by bus
or by car, we suggest that you eat prior to your arrival
in Quebec since we are expecting a lot of people on
the 21st in an area with very few restaurants.
* Toilets will be on site, and ambulances will be available
in case of emergency.
* The organizing committee of the Peopleís Summit
has obtained a demonstration permit from the Quebec
municipality and we are discussing with the authorities
our request to close the streets to traffic.
* The route is wheelchair-friendly.
* We strongly suggest that participants bring warm clothes
with them, as well as rain gear and food. Watch
the weather forecasts the day prior to the march.
FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, WE RECOMMEND
THAT YOU CONTACT YOUR RESPECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS
WELCOME TO THE MARCH OF THE PEOPLES OF THE AMERICAS!!!

CROSS BORDER ORGANIZING CONFERENCE APRIL
22ND
Date: 4/13/01
From: Bill
Neal
Border Action Activists,
From the beginning of the project to organize the April 21st
STOP the FTAA event we have discussed the importance of having
a LONG TERM perspective. Key to this will be the Sunday April
22nd Conference in Tijuana. This event will aim to build on
the success of the Saturday mobilization.
So far our efforts have focused on making Saturday a fantastic
event. It will be. We also have to put effort into the following
day. In a way our model for this discussion will be last years
"Globofobicos" Festival. Can we build on that, expand
it, or should it be different altogether?
Either way, Globofobicos could be the starting point.
Its time to talk program. Below is a proposal worked out at
a couple Los Angeles coalition meetings, with the input of
a couple Bay Area and San Diego folks.
I would like to see more input followed
by a conference call NO LATER than Wednesday, April 18.
(Originally I proposed tomorrow, Saturday, but I know thats
not going to happen).
PLEASE FIND A FEW PEOPLE FROM EACH CITY
WILLING TO PARTICIPATE IN A PHONE CALL.
Please respond to this via
email or phone, 213-380-3929.
Bill Neal
Los Angeles
DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A FINAL PROPOSAL,
IT IS JUST FOR DISCUSSION...
APRIL 22nd CROSS BORDER CONFERENCE...
12NOON
Welcome
12:30pm--1:45pm
"CROSS BORDER SOLIDARITY, WHERE
WE'VE BEEN, WHERE WE'RE GOING..."
I think Jaime Cota should kick it off. He can talk about Globofobicos
and the experience of the last year, where we've come from,
and ideas for where we'd like to go. An activist from the
US can follow on the experience of mobilizing for April 21,
and likewise put forward shared goals.
The presentations could be followed by OPEN DISCUSSION where
the greatest possible diversity of input would be encouraged.
2:00pm--4:00pm
WORKSHOPS AND REPORT BACKS
WE should STRONGLY emphasize that these session are WORKING
meetings. We welcome all the wonderful, wise people in the
movement, but lets make sure real PROPOSALS for actions, structures,
response networks, etc... come out of these discussions.
So, the topics should be flexible, but some ideas for sessions
include:
labor and worker's rights
Immigrant rights
amnesty movement
border violence, repression and militarization
Environment
health
FTAA
Globalization
privatization/deregulation
zapatistas
indigenous rights
agricultural workers and land issues
Colombia? other ideas?
if people wanted to, we could also have sessions on stuff
like...
Art, Culture and Action, etc....
These discussions should be facilitated by people that know
the issues and can help keep them focused on the CONCRETE.
(PS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED)
A couple people from each session should take responsibility
for
A). writing up the ideas/proposals of the group, and
B). Having someone prepare a report back to the general meeting.
4:00-5:00pm
DINNER BREAK Maybe a few people
from each committee could get together for dinner and work
out a proposed "action plan" to be presented to
the general body.
5:30-7:00pm
LAST SESSION, THE FUTURE OF CROSS-BORDER
ORGANIZING:
UPBEAT, SHORT PRESENTATION followed by proposals for mission
and action Goals include, name for the network(?), mission
statement, and a proposal for at least ONE real event.
Many questions arise: Should there be a monthly "newsletter"
(email or otherwise)? a website? Should a coordinating committee
be proposed and elected?, etc... How can we keep it simple,
but also be effective and in it for the long term?
I feel that the most important thing is that something REAL
has to come out of the meeting, or a huge opportunity will
be missed. The struggle on the border, for real internationalism,
is too important. This could help set the stage for the next
few years of border organizing if all goes well.
Look forward to hearing back from everyone,
Bill Neal
